Choosing Shoes for Autistic Children

Choosing baby shoes for children with Autism can be a challenging endeavor. However, it can be done if you are armed with the right knowledge. Before anything, I would urge you to go to a behavioral psychologist to give you some do’s and don’ts when shopping for anything.

That being said, this article will provide you with some tips on how to choose a pair of shoes for your child that suffers from Autism. Do not worry, it is actually easy if you know what you’re doing.

Choose Footwear that is Comfortable

You want your child to be comfortable when wearing a pair of shoes, even more so for children who are suffering from a condition. That being said, there are a couple of ways you can tackle this depending on where you will buy the shoes.

If you are going to buy online, it can really help that you trace an outline of your child’s shoes so that you can have a frame of reference. You can then confer with the store’s staff to help you find the right pair of shoes based on the size of your baby’s feet.

I also recommend that you go for shoes that have Velcro straps. That is because when you are dealing with a young child, you may need to take it on and off depending on their needs and such shoes will allow you to do just that.

Pick One that Has the Right Color

Children with autism typically have a preference when it comes to colors. So, if you are shopping online, you can have them look at the picture of the shoe and they will let you know if they actually love the color.

Choose a Variety of Different Shoe Types

If you have the money, I suggest that you buy a couple of shoes with varying shoe types. For instance, if you are going to buy sneakers, perhaps you can also buy some crocs of even children’s boots as well.

The reason why you want to do this is that you want to create some tolerance to different shoe types so that your child will not be aversive to other types of shoes (this is especially useful for whenever your child grows up to be an adult).

Conduct Some Practice Sessions

Now, once your child tries the shoes on for the first time, they might act weird. That is considered normal since they are still trying to process and have the feel for the new pair of shoes.

For them to be accustomed to their chosen footwear, you may want to conduct multiple practice sessions. The aim of such sessions would be to breed some familiarity with the footwear on so that they won’t get weirded out or even scared with them on their feet.

You also want to try out the different shoe types as well since you do not want your child to have a certain preference. You want them to be able to wear any footwear that is fit for certain types of occasions.
